  • The highlight of Rio Carnival is undoubtedly the Carnival Parade which is called the Samba Parade or the Samba Schools Parade. This is a completely unique to Brazil and even though there are many small parades throughout the country, the biggest and most elaborate takes place in Rio de Janeiro.

The Rio Samba Parade is a competition between all the Rio samba schools. The judges and spectators watch the parades in the Sambodromo which was specifically built for this event. Then on the day after completion of the parades, the judging begins on live TV. On the weekend that follows, there is a champions parade celebrating the winning samba school.

The Samba Parade is something everyone should experience at least once in their life. The event is broadcast live to several countries. Watching on TV is fine but is nothing like being there and watching at least for one night.

  • A great way to understand the Carnival spirit is by attending a samba school carnival dance rehearsal. Carnival happens only once a year but the preparation for it runs the entire year.

Samba schools are warehouses where participants practice. There are drummers and dancers working hard trying to reach the perfect performance. This practice is opened to the public and is a fun opportunity to witness the high energy samba dance, learn the music and perhaps learn how to samba yourself.
